THE EXCELLENCE OF WISDOM FROM GOD

In Proverbs 8:11, “For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it”. Why does this verse tell us that the wisdom from God is better than the precious rubies or all other riches of this world? Let’s explore and identify all the wonderful things and wisdom from God.

Where can we get this wisdom from? The precepts of wisdom are easily made known to us as they are  proclaimed aloud to us from the Word of God and we should hear them (Proverbs 8:1-10). In verse 10, God instructs us to receive His instruction rather than silver, and knowledge rather than choice gold. If God gives instruction to a wise man, then the man will get wiser and increase in learning (Proverbs 9:9).

However, where does wisdom begin? The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. The reverence towards our mighty God is the first step towards a true religion of being true children of God, as our mind must be filled with the knowledge of the things above and of the holy things, and the things pertaining to a true service to God. Well, in Colossians 3:1-2, we are told to seek those things which are above, and set our affection not on the things of the earth. Earthly things are not going to last forever but the knowledge and wisdom of God’s Word are everlasting. For Jesus said that Heaven and earth will pass away , but His words will not pass away.

Why is it important to seek wisdom that is from above? We can find security and safety. In Proverbs 2:8, we are told that God guards the paths of justice and He preserves the way of His saints (believers). Only when a true believer and follower who walks in integrity (honourable and moral character ), then God will protect and guard him. We should also not forsake God’s wisdom. “For I give you good doctrine: Do not forsake my law” (Proverbs 4:2), and “...Let your heart retain my words; Keep my commandments, and live” (Proverbs 4:4). Yes, only by keeping His words and commandments that we can live and for many years. Proverbs 4:10 “Hear, my son, and accept my sayings, And the years of your life will be many” is also mentioned in Proverbs 3:1-2.

These are all the good things you will have if only you are wise and if not, there will be a heavy price to be paid. Proverbs 9:12 says that if you are wise, you are wise for yourself(for your own benefit) but if you scoff (thoughtlessly ridicule and disdain), you alone will pay the penalty.

Finally, an assurance of happiness and life eternal to all those who do and hearken to God’s wisdom:

“Blessed is the man who listens to me, Watching daily at my gates, Waiting at the posts of my doors. For whoever finds me finds life, And obtains favor from the LORD;” (Proverbs 8:33-34)

Ask Yourself:

  1. Where can we get this wisdom from?

  2. Where does wisdom first begin?

  3. Is seeking wisdom important?

Suggested Answers:

  1. From the word of God

  2. The fear of the Lord

  3. Yes, it is an assurance of happiness and life eternal
