LOVING OURSELVES IN DIFFICULT TIMES

Updated: Dec 30, 2024

Many of us inevitably struggle with insecurities and self-doubt at various points in our lives. How can we support ourselves during these times, and where does God fit into the picture?

In a recent Bible study session with a few ladies, we explored the topic of “Should I Love Myself?” through a podcast series called Fashioning My Faith. The discussion and the podcast provided insights that resonated with me, and I hope to share these reflections as a reminder during challenging times.

First, we are created in God’s image (Genesis 1:27), and we are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14). This reminds us that each person is intricately and deliberately designed by God, reflecting His immense creativity and care. When we dislike certain aspects of ourselves, are we questioning God's design? We admire His works in the world, yet sometimes forget that we, too, are His creation. Are we doubting His craftsmanship when we doubt ourselves? Recognising that we are intentionally created encourages us to embrace and love ourselves despite perceived “flaws”.

Second, God sees us. Leah’s story, for instance, reveals her struggles with unmet desires and feelings of inferiority. Outwardly, she is portrayed less than her beautiful sister, Rachel. Her longing for her husband’s love was also overshadowed by Rachel’s favour. Yet, the Bible tells us, “When the Lord saw that Leah was unloved, He opened her womb; but Rachel was barren” (Genesis 29:31). Even when we feel unseen or undervalued, God perceives our pain and provides for us in unexpected ways. Leah’s story demonstrates that God’s recognition and love are more significant than human approval. Her fulfillment came from her relationship with God, highlighting her worth in His eyes. God’s grace gave Leah a significant role in biblical history, showing that our value to Him surpasses human validation.

Last, our weaknesses can be sources of strength. In 2 Corinthians 12:7-10, Paul speaks of a “thorn in the flesh” that he prayed to be removed, yet it remained. God responded, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Our struggles and limitations are opportunities for God’s grace and power to be revealed in our lives. By shifting our focus from our shortcomings to God’s strength, we learn to rely on His power and appreciate our worth through our vulnerabilities.

While it is important to love ourselves, we must also stay humble. Philippians 2:3-4 reminds us to do nothing out of selfish ambition, but to value others above ourselves. Learning to acknowledge our flaws and imperfections, while remaining confident in God’s grace, is the ultimate form of self-love.

I hope this can serve as a good reminder for all of us to love ourselves and treat ourselves a little kinder on tough days. Above all, remember that God sees us. He is always with us and even in our darkest moments, He loves us even if we struggle to love ourselves.

Ask Yourself:

  1. What are three things we can remind ourselves of during challenging times?

  2. What can we learn from Paul’s “thorn in the flesh”?

  3. How has God seen me through a difficult moment in life and how have I grown from it?

Suggested Answers:

  1. We are created in God’s image, God sees us and our weaknesses can be sources of strength.

  2. Our struggles and limitations are opportunities for God’s grace and power to be revealed in our lives. We will learn to rely on Him.

  3. You may discuss this with your Bible class teachers or the writer.
