In the tumultuous journey of life, have you ever faced a situation where you had to make an important decision? True enough, this happens to us all, and we often find ourselves facing challenges that prompt a fundamental question: Is it going to “fight or flight”? This age-old dilemma deeply rooted in our human nature, seemingly governs the very decision that you and I make. If that is the case, then how do I make the right decision? As fellow Christians and non-Christians, we must turn to the Bible for guidance and solace, seeking wisdom on how to navigate the battles we encounter in our modern world.
According to the Bible, in 2 Timothy 1:7 (NKJV): "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind." This verse reminds us that as children of God, we are endowed with a spirit of courage and resilience. Rather than succumbing to fear and flight, we are empowered to confront challenges head-on, fortified by the strength that comes from our faith in God. For example, when we are facing problems and troubles that have been plaguing our lives, we have 2 options - to run away, or to fight on. As Christians, we must have faith and trust in God that he will see us through these difficult times, bearing in mind that the suffering and pain is all temporary. Afterall, such issues are nothing to our Almighty Father in heaven.
On the topic of adversities, in the Book of Matthew, Jesus Himself even provides profound insight into facing adversity. Matthew 11:28-30 (NKJV) encourages us to turn to Him in moments of weariness: "Come to me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." This verse emphasizes the importance of finding refuge in Christ during times of struggle, rather than resorting to flight in search of worldly solutions.
The Bible also consistently underscores the significance of relying on God's strength. Ephesians 6:10 (NKJV) implores us to "be strong in the Lord and in the power of his might." Armed with this divine strength that God has bestowed upon us all, we can confront challenges with unwavering faith, confident that God is our refuge and fortress, and in him I will trust (Psalm 91:2).
However, this does not mean that “flight” is a completely wrong option to take. In some cases, running away turns out to be another best solution. For example, when we are faced with temptation, fleeing is ultimately one of the best solutions to avoid falling into the pit of sin. According to Proverbs 4:14-15 (NKJV), “Do not enter the path of the wicked, And do not walk in the way of evil. Avoid it, do not travel on it; Turn away from it and pass on.” Turning away from such problems helps us avoid falling into deeper problems, and even getting trapped in the illusion of fighting on despite its futility.
In considering both cases, how should one decide on which is the best option?
In times of similar uncertainty, it is crucial for Christians to anchor themselves in prayer and seek discernment through the scriptures. It is noteworthy that Philippians 4:6-7 (NKJV) reassures us, saying, "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."
So, are we going to “fight or flight”? As Christians, our answer lies in the promises of God and the unwavering faith that He instills within us. Through prayer, scripture, and trust in His divine plan, we find the strength to face challenges head-on, knowing that our ultimate victory is secured in Christ. However, in some cases, running away is also a good solution. It thus boils down on us to seek solace in our congregation and Bibles, and allow God to guide us to make the right decisions. In our ever changing world, we Christians are like the Sun - forever shining and illuminating our world till the end of time. It is therefore up to each and everyone one of us, no matter your age, your race, your height etc., to stand steadfast and become changemakers for God.
