Romans 12:3 teaches us that humility involves not overestimating oneself but instead, exercising sober judgment, aligning with the teachings of God's word. Therefore, the journey of humility is continuous, growing as we gain deeper insight into God's teachings and develop a greater appreciation for the work of Christ. And as followers of Christ, we are called to embody the spirit of humility, mirroring the example set by our Lord.
i. Understanding Humility:
Humility is often misunderstood in today's society. It is not weakness or self-degradation, rather it reflects an attitude of the heart that acknowledges our reliance on God and respects the value of others. Philippians 2:3-4 reminds us, "Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.".
Humility is also acknowledging our strengths and weaknesses and recognising that everyone has room for improvement. Philippians 3:12 "Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me." Apostle Paul emphasises the ongoing process of spiritual development and the pursuit of becoming more Christ-like.
ii. Christ's Example of Humility:
The epitome of humility is exemplified in Jesus Christ. Despite being the Son of God, He chose to humble Himself, adopting the role of a servant and willingly submitting to the Father's will (Philippians 2:5-8). Throughout His time on Earth, Jesus consistently showed humility in His interactions with people, such as washing the feet of His disciples and reaching out to the marginalised through His ministry.
iii. The Blessings of Humility:
James 4:6 tells us "God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.". When we willingly submit ourselves before God, acknowledging His sovereignty and recognizing our dependence on Him, we position ourselves for His blessings. God is drawn to the humble heart, and as we humble ourselves, He promises to exalt us in His perfect timing and according to His divine plan. Also, humility not only promotes unity and harmony in our relationships but also nurtures a mindset of understanding, compassion and a willingness to serve others.
iv. Cultivating Humility in Our Lives:
Practising humility requires intentional effort and we can cultivate humility by:
Being open to correction and learning from mistakes, recognising the need for growth.
Choosing to serve others with love and humility, recognising that they are also God’s creations.
Reflecting on the example of Christ and seeking to emulate His humility in our interactions.
Acknowledging the blessings in our lives and attributing them to God's grace rather than personal achievement (pride).
Studying the scriptures to gain wisdom and understanding, allowing God's Word to guide our thoughts and actions.
Let us embrace humility as a mark of true discipleship and a reflection of the love and humility of our Savior, for He is the author and perfecter of our faith. May His example inspire us to humble ourselves before God and others, trusting in His grace to transform our hearts and lives.
Discussion Questions:
According to Philippians 2:3-4, what practical actions are associated with a humble mindset in our interactions with others?
According to James 4:6, what is the relationship between God's grace and humility?
How can the lessons on humility from this discussion be practically applied in our daily lives?
Answers:
Avoid selfish ambitions, value others above yourselves and look to the interests of others.
God opposes the proud and favours the humble. The more humble an individual is, recognizing his or her need for God and depending on His guidance and provision, the more he or she positions himself or herself to receive the abundant grace and favour that God willingly extends.
